  My friend died. Now what?

  my whole belief system has been shaken.

  i don't believe anything i learned while a jw.

  but now a dear friend has passed away.

  My condolences on your loss. I know i told someone else this, so at the risk of being repetitive, I will say it again.

  As I sat at my father's bedside immediately after he died, I had such a strong feeling that whatever it is that makes us who we are,the life force, a soul, a spirit, whatever you call it, it is eternal. This energy is too precious to end. Maybe heaven, maybe re- incarnation, maybe sunshine. But it is there somewhere. Believe whatever gives you comfort. Because no matter where the dead go, we here on earth miss them.

  Questions about Athletic Activities while a JW

  hi, everyone.. on my researches about the jdubs.

  i read that they are restricted or forbidden from engaging in activities such as sports, working out in a gym or in martial arts.. i, who does all three, have a question for the members of this forum:.

  when you were a jw, could you do any of the three activities mentioned?.

  My daughter Birdie's JW boyfriend is an extremely gifted athlete, and has been allowed to play on school sports teams. I know he juggles the nights he goes to service, so that he can make his games. He has never in the past been allowed to play on teams outside of school. He told me how badly he had wanted to play on a "real" hockey team instead of "brothers' hockey" and I could hear the intense longing in his voice. His other passion, other than my daughter (lol), is volleyball, and is now being allowed to try out for elite club teams. I suspect his parents think he is better off spending many hours exhausting himself playing volleyball, than having romantic thoughts about my daugher and hanging near the computer so they can talk. Anyway, from what he told me, he is unusual in the amount of sports he is allowed to be involved in, and most of the JW kids he knows can only ski,snowboard, play hockey and everything else with other JW kids. We know one JW girl who has only recently been allowed to spend a lot of time at the ballet school in dance classes, and again, from what I heard, her parents felt that the exercise helped keep her away from a guy she had been involved with.
  In fairness to the JW parents involved, allowing the kids to be involved in something that they really love, even if it is to distract them from the opposite sex, seems to be a humaine way of handling it.

  excuse the waiting like nature of this post but i've been driving machinery for a few days wondering about stuff .. like why are mosquitos louder at night?

  and how does medicine know where to go?

  and why do ruthless dictators always wear really cheap illfitting sunglasses?

  Wow, a topic I actually know something about. I can help with the medicine bit. The medicine goes all over your body through your blood stream. Think of the molecules of drug as being shaped a certain way, sort of like a key for example. The drug reacts with things called receptors, sort of like locks. Ideally the medicine only works on the receptors you want it to, but not always. Sometimes it works on similar receptors elsewhere in your body...leading to side effects. Remember medicine is all over your body (if it is something taken orally or injected), so use it with care, read the labels and ask your pharmacist for specific information.

  we are not jehovah's witnesses because of a variety of circumstances, but one thing we all share is that we question.. what factors come together to make us questioners?.

  but i know a lot of very smart non-questioning jehovah's witnesses.. bravery?

  What a fascinating and intuitive thread!
  As an outsider looking in, I have no relevent insights into JW life. I only know that with any group, or religion or culture with its own strong rules there is a state of unity and belonging. For some people there is a need to feel that they are part of something "right". That as long as they follow they rules they are "good" is vital to their feelings of security and safety. The stronger the rules, the stronger the sense of righteousness in being part of it.

  I don't feel we can underestimate how important it is to "belong" and how terribly hard it is to change who you belong to. Often much of a person's vision of themself is tied into the group they belong to, so changing the group involves a huge evolution in your whole vision of "self".

  On a much milder scale, look at the cliques that teenagers form. For some, the security of belonging is more important thhan questioning the behavior or values of the clique.

  So, I have no answers, but the security of belonging may be a factor.

  some teens are so grown up, and have good vocabularies, because their parents talk to them, and they learn how to speak.

  ok, Namewithheld, I understand. Like I said I am new at this posting business, although I have been reading the site for several months. I didn't post before bacasue I am interested as an observer, but didn't feel that I had anything important to contribute because I had never lived the JW life, although I had a strict religious upbringing, but not JW,thank goodness.

  Vouched for by her Mom. Please be kind to her. Do you have any idea how much courage it takes for a kid to post on this board? To discuss a personal situation with strangers who can give her insight into her first big crush. A guy who lives a really strange religion. She can't talk about it with school friends, they wouldn't have the faintest idea , as he "passes" so well. If you are interested look up the post of mine that introduced myself and the situation in the parenting forum here.
  Maybe I made a mistake in letting her get involved here. It didn't even cross my mind that people would not think she was a child...OK teenager.
  Please discuss with her, but don't be mean to her. She won't have a chance to look at any of this till after school, then she can reply as she wishes. By the way, she writes well becsue she is an honour student in a program for bright children.
